We're in Burgos!

The last three days have been very eventful. On Tuesday Larry and I flew to Madrid where we arrived on Wednesday morning at a few minutes past 8 AM. Jose was there waiting for us and we headed to the hotel. Unfortunately the hotel was packed with Galataserai fans who were in Madrid to watch the quarter final of the Champions cup between Real Madrid and Galataserai of  Istanbul. More on the match later. Due to the hotel being packed we has to wait in the hotel over two hours until enough rooms were vacated and cleaned. While we waited there, Ed and Emilio arrived.

After finally checking in we spent sometime preparing the back packs by sorting out the items between the back packs and the suitcases we were going to leave behind in Madrid until we get back there in three weeks.

Had a great lunch in a restaurant across the street from the train station around 2 PM which is within the time window when people in Spain have their lunch. Most of us opted for the "Cocido MadrileƱo" which is a typical dish from the Madrid region. Emilio opted for "Bacalao al ajo arriero." He liked it a lot even though it had tomato and onions. Anyone who know Emilio knows that he detests tomatoes, onions, and chicken. He likes ketchup though. Go figure...

Around 5PM my cousin Marisa came to the hotel and took our suitcases with her for safekeeping. At that point it felt like we were fully committed to the journey. But first we had to check out the town. We took the subway, the Madrid Metro, to Puerta del Sol which is not only the center of Madrid but also considered the geographic center of Spain. We hit a few spots and had some very good tapas and saw some of the well known Madrid landmarks such as Plaza Mayor. We ended up watching the match between Real Madrid and Galataserai at a restaurant while eating Pulpo a la Gallega.

All in all it was a great day for all of us but a bit more so for me. Being in the town that I was born on  my birthday, with my brother, with my good friends, eating great food, and watching my team beat the opponent 3-0. Priceless. What a great way to forget you're suffering from yet lag?

Today, Thursday was also an interesting day. I'll write about it tomorrow but right now it's 11:40 PM and tomorrow, Friday April 5th, we start walking at 7:30 AM and we have 20 miles ahead of us.
